Most licensing questions get answered one SKU at a time — how much is cPanel, how much is Imunify360 — which hides the number that actually decides your margin: the total monthly license bill for one hosting node, divided by the accounts on it.
This article does that sum. Three realistic builds, every line item priced at Panellicense list, cost per account at different fill rates, and the break-even point against a typical retail plan. All prices are USD per month, per server, billed monthly and prorated to the 15th.
The line items
Every product in a shared-hosting stack is priced on one of three models. Knowing which is which is most of the planning work.
| Product | Priced per | Entry price |
|---|---|---|
| cPanel | Server, banded by account count | $35.00 (Admin Cloud, 5 accounts) |
| Plesk Obsidian | Server, banded by domain count | $15.99 (Web Admin, 10 domains) |
| InterWorx | Server, banded by account count | $7.80 (VPS Lease, 35 accounts) |
| CloudLinux | Server, unlimited accounts | $13.95 |
| LiteSpeed Enterprise | Server, banded by RAM/workers | $9.00 (Site Owner) / $23.40 (Web Host Lite) |
| Imunify360 | Server, unlimited users | $7.95 (AV) / $24.75 (360 Unlimited) |
| KernelCare | Server | $3.95 |
| JetBackup | Server | $9.95 |
| R1Soft SBM | Server | $14.00 |
| Softaculous | Server | $1.50 (VPS) / $2.50 (dedicated) |
The panel is the only line that scales with how many customers you put on the box. Every other product is flat per server, which is why fill rate — not plan size — dominates the per-account cost.
Build 1 — 30-account starter VPS
The stack most resellers actually launch with: a 4 vCPU / 8 GB VPS, cPanel, CloudLinux for tenant isolation, and the security and backup lines you cannot sell hosting without.
| Line | SKU | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Control panel | cPanel Pro Cloud (30 accounts) | $53.00 |
| Hosting OS | CloudLinux OS for cPanel | $13.95 |
| Live patching | KernelCare | $3.95 |
| Security | Imunify360 Unlimited | $24.75 |
| Backups | JetBackup | $9.95 |
| Installer | Softaculous VPS | $1.50 |
| Total | $107.10 |
At the 30-account ceiling that is $3.57 per account. At a realistic 20 accounts sold, it is $5.36 — which is more than most budget shared plans retail for. Build 1 only works if you sell at $8-15/month, or if you treat the first months as customer acquisition cost.
No web server line appears here because Apache ships with cPanel. Adding LiteSpeed Web Host Lite at $23.40 pushes the total to $130.50 and per-account to $4.35 at full occupancy.
Build 2 — 100-account shared node
The margin build. Bare metal, Premier Metal at the 100-account band, LiteSpeed instead of Apache, and the full security suite.
| Line | SKU | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Control panel | cPanel Premier Metal (100 accounts) | $69.00 |
| Hosting OS | CloudLinux OS for cPanel | $13.95 |
| Live patching | KernelCare | $3.95 |
| Web server | LiteSpeed Web Host Professional | $41.40 |
| Security | Imunify360 Unlimited | $24.75 |
| Backups | JetBackup | $9.95 |
| Installer | Softaculous Dedicated | $2.50 |
| Total | $165.50 |
The panel jumped $16 for 70 more accounts; everything else stayed flat. That is the whole economics of shared hosting in one table — the second, third, and hundredth account on a node are close to free in license terms.
Cost per account by fill rate
| Accounts on the node | License cost / account | % of a $4.99 retail plan |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | $6.62 | 133% |
| 50 | $3.31 | 66% |
| 75 | $2.21 | 44% |
| 100 | $1.66 | 33% |
Break-even against licenses alone, at $4.99/month, is 34 accounts. Add the server itself and support labour and the honest target is 50+ before the node contributes margin. An empty node is the expensive one — the fix is migrating accounts onto it, not downgrading SKUs.
Build 3 — Plesk agency node
Different shape entirely: an agency running 30 client sites on AlmaLinux, no shared-tenancy isolation needed because every site belongs to one customer.
| Line | SKU | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Control panel | Plesk Web Pro (VPS, 30 domains) | $28.99 |
| Live patching | KernelCare | $3.95 |
| Security | ImunifyAV | $7.95 |
| Installer | Softaculous VPS | $1.50 |
| Total | $42.39 |
That is $1.41 per site, a quarter of Build 1's per-account cost, because three assumptions changed: no CloudLinux (single tenant, so LVE and CageFS buy nothing — see CloudLinux vs AlmaLinux), the scanner-only ImunifyAV tier instead of the full WAF, and backups handled by Plesk Backup Manager to S3 at storage cost only. JetBackup is not an option here — it licenses for cPanel and DirectAdmin, so Plesk fleets that want a third-party backup product use R1Soft at $14.00.
What to cut, in order
If a node has to get cheaper, cut in this order — cheapest capability loss first.
- Softaculous ($1.50-2.50). Never cut this. It is the cheapest line on the invoice and the one customers notice fastest.
- LiteSpeed ($23.40-82.80). The largest optional line. Apache with EA-Nginx caching is slower but free. Cut it on nodes selling on price, keep it on nodes selling on speed.
- Imunify360 → ImunifyAV (saves $16.80). You lose the WAF and proactive defense. On single-tenant nodes that is fine; on shared hosting it is how you end up on Spamhaus.
- JetBackup ($9.95). Only if cPanel's built-in backups genuinely cover your restore SLA — they mostly do not, because there is no end-user self-restore.
- CloudLinux ($13.95). Last resort on shared hosting. Removing tenant isolation to save $14 is how one customer's runaway PHP takes the node down.
The panel is not on this list. Swapping panels to save money is a migration project, not a line-item change.
Above 100 accounts, and across servers
Two things change once you outgrow a single Premier node:
- cPanel account bands above 100 are quoted, not listed. Per-account cost keeps falling as the band rises, but the monthly invoice climbs. See the cPanel tier breakdown and ask sales for the band you need.
- Volume pricing starts at 5 licenses on one billing account, and most resellers see 15-25% off list once they cross 20 licenses. That discount applies across the whole stack, not just the panel — at Build 2 pricing, 20% off is $33/month per node.
